How to schedule tax payments with the IRS

Tax Return Payments with the IRS

To make a payment for your tax return, follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit the Payments section on the Internal Revenue Service website.

  2. Click on Go to Your Account and then sign in to your Online Account.

  3. Log into your IRS.gov account. If you don't have one, we recommend creating an account for easier access.

  4. Click on Make a Payment.

  5. For the Reason for Payment, select Balance Due.

  6. Under Apply Payment To, choose Income Tax - Form 1040.

  7. Specify the Tax Period as 20XX.

  8. Save the payment confirmation and upload it into your portal.

Quarterly Estimated Payments with the IRS

To make your quarterly estimated payments, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Payments section on the IRS website.

  2. Click on Go to Your Account and sign in to your Online Account.

  3. Log into your IRS.gov account. If you don’t have one, we suggest creating an account.

  4. Click on Make a Payment.

  5. For the Reason for Payment, select Estimated Tax.

  6. Under Apply Payment To, choose 1040ES.

  7. Specify the Tax Period as 20XX.

  8. Save the payment confirmation and upload it into your portal.

Extension Payments with the IRS

If you need to make an extension payment, here’s how:

  1. Visit the Payments section on the IRS website.

  2. Click on Go to Your Account and sign in to your Online Account.

  3. Log into your IRS.gov account. If you don’t have one, we recommend creating an account.

  4. Click on Make a Payment.

  5. For the Reason for Payment, select Extension.

  6. Under Apply Payment To, choose 4868.

  7. Specify the Tax Period as 20XX.

  8. Save the payment confirmation and upload it into your portal.
